Sea Urchin Season Is Open- Our centro urchins are available now.

by David Stringer on November 12, 2013

Our large tongued Centro's are back in season

Fresh Kina and Uni every week, large tongues of roe, creamy and delicious.

We are pleased to be able to offer our most popular kina, the long spine Centro.
They are a larger tongue than the Helio's and are the kina of choice for many people. For those that have not tasted them, they are rich and creamy, delicious fresh or can be added to any seafood recipe in place of almost any seafood.

Their taste is like the ocean, however not as salty. We have had nothing but great reports from our customers. These urchins are harvested from the chilled waters of South Eastern Australia, some say they are very similar to the NZ KInas.

Sea Urchin predominately eat seaweed and as well as tasting great some say they have great health benefits.

natascha Mirosch @ The foodiste.com

by David Stringer on February 18, 2013

I was travelling down the QLD and NSW coast over the month of January 2013 and was contacted by Natascha Mirosch.  Natascha is a Food writer at The Brisbane Times (www.brisbanetimes.com.au), wine lover. Editor of the Queensland Good Food Guide. Greedyguts and Prolific tweeter.  She had seen some sea urchin roe for sale in a shop in Brisbane and wanted to know more.  Being an easy find online, Sea Urchins Australia caught her attention and we talked.   Here is her story in the Foodiste.com about Sea Urchins Australia.

Enjoy the read.

Centros Have Spawned

by Dave Blogger on June 19, 2012

Winter Is Here And The Centro's Have Spawned

Yes we are sad to say that the Centros are finished for the season.
Don’t despair the Helios are just around the corner.

Yesterday was the last day of the season for the Centro Sea Urchin, they have all pretty much started to spawn and have geared up for their annual breeding cycle.  This season has been great for the quality of the Centro roe, our customers have been very happy with the size and taste.    We are about a month away from the Helio Sea Urchin to be in season, don't worry we will let you know when they are available.
For those who have not had the opportunity to taste the Helio, they are slightly smaller in tongue size, slightly sweeter and absolutely delicious!

Our First Year of Operation

This is our first year of operation and our customer base has been growing steadily, it has been exciting to see where our customers come from and what comments they have had about the taste and quality of Australian Sea urchin Roe.  Our customers are all in Australia however their taste for sea urchin roe stems from their ethnic origins.  They have been exposed to the pleasures of the sea through generations of living and feeding from the oceans of the world. Some of our customers come from New Zealand, Africa, Greece, Japan, Vietnam, Malaysia and China, there are also a few Australians venturing into the unknown magnificent taste too.
Thanks to all who have given Sea Urchins Australia a go and have had the opportunity to taste great quality food and to have experienced great service, thanks again for your feedback.

Angasi/Bluff Oysters Are Back In Season

by Dave Blogger on May 23, 2012

We are pleased to announce that our Angasi/Bluff oysters are back in season.  They are available in punnets or whole, we cannot guarantee that all will arrive alive if we freight them live as they are wild and sometimes it is very hard to tell. However we can freight them in punnets shucked and ready to consume.  Please contact us if you require more information.

Ostrea angasi is a native oyster to Australia that is commonly referred to as the flat oyster, mud, bluff, Port Lincoln or Belon oyster. It is an oceanic species, found throughout  river estuary habitats that have a significant tidal flow with the ocean. Its natural distribution spans from mid-New South Wales all along the southern coast of Tasmania and up into the Swan River in Western Australia. This particular species of oyster is also similar to its European cousin, the European flat oyster ostrea edulis.

The Angasi Oyster has a mild to strong taste that is a delight to eat, can be eaten raw or cooked and is very similar in taste to the Bluff Oyster of New Zealand hence being called a Bluff oyster. The Bluff Oyster is a delicacy to the Maori and the Angasi seems to be a great substitute to homesick Kiwi's.

Bad Weather Over 'for now'

by Dave Blogger on August 25, 2011

Divers are gearing up after 3 weeks of bad weather

Our fishermen are gearing up to dive for Sea Urchin in the next few days.

Over the last 3 weeks, our divers have been inundated with rain and bad weather, underwater visibility has been down to less than 2 feet. It has been a very unseasonal winter as we have all seen, t-shirts in August and snow all the way up the North Island of New Zealand.    These factors have caused some delays and on behalf of the weather we are sorry!  We aim to have all orders collected and shipped this week, some may be into next week but our aim is for all back orders to be fulfilled. Our apologies to all those who are patiently waiting for their orders to arrive.

If you have not placed an order and wish to, please have a look at our products, and make the most of the divers being in the water, we do aim to have your order to you within 6 business days.
